What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis causes the bones to weaken and become so fragile that minor stressors like a fall can cause fractures or broken bones. These fractures commonly occur on the hip, wrist, or spine. While osteoporosis can affect men and women, postmenopausal women are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis because of decreased estrogen levels and lower bone mass. Estrogen plays an important role in bone health and maintaining bone density. Steroid use – corticosteroids specifically – is also a risk factor for osteoporosis.
How is Osteoporosis Diagnosed?
Bone thinning can be measured with a traditional bone density test, also referred to as a DEXA scan. In addition to a bone density scan, there are labs that can be measured to detect bone loss or the rate of bone turnover.
How to Treat Osteoporosis for Optimal Bone Health
Several medications can treat osteoporosis, but there are also a few lifestyle habits that you can adjust to prevent osteoporosis from developing. Exercises like weight-bearing and those involving balance and posture will also strengthen your bones and prevent the risk of fracture as you age. You should also limit your alcohol intake and avoid smoking since these substances can speed up bone loss.
If you have low bone mineral density and are at risk of osteoporosis, the following osteoporosis medications and treatments can help:
HRT
Taking bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may simultaneously improve their bone health. Both estrogen and testosterone can increase bone density and bone formation, and can be helpful in the treatment and prevention of moderate to severe osteoporosis.
Vitamin D Supplementation
Optimizing Vitamin D levels is an important part of the treatment for improving bone density. Vitamin D can be obtained through dietary sources or sun exposure. Most people have a Vitamin D level below the optimal level. By replacing Vitamin D adequately, we can improve bone health.
