What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning, also called epidermal leveling, is a cosmetic treatment that can restore a more radiant skin complexion and smooth skin texture. Although it uses a surgical blade to “shave” the face, this treatment is much different than simple hair removal. Dead skin cells and facial hair are removed with the blade to reveal a new, healthy layer of skin cells. This also creates a more permeable skin barrier so that nourishing skin products can absorb easier and more deeply into the skin.

How Does Dermaplaning Work?

The dermaplaning treatment is performed with a surgical scalpel gently swept across the skin’s surface to remove dead skin cells and fine facial hair or peach fuzz. As the top layer of dead or damaged skin cells is removed, surface imperfections like deep acne scars, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and dull skin will also be improved.

Am I a Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is beneficial for most healthy men and women without preexisting skin conditions like sensitive skin, eczema, or psoriasis. If you have an active acne breakout, cold sores, or skin infection, we will recommend that you wait to receive treatment.

What to Expect

At the start of your dermaplaning procedure, the skin will be cleansed and prepared for treatment. The surgical scalpel will be lightly pressed onto the skin and moved in a sweeping motion across the skin. You will feel a light scratching sensation, but this is generally not painful, and patients often tolerate this treatment well without any anesthetic. It’s important to note that the scalpel will not cut your skin. Instead, it gently shaves off facial hair and the surface layers of dead skin.

To reduce swelling and skin irritation, a soothing gel may be placed on your skin after treatment. Mild redness, swelling, and discomfort are not uncommon, but these symptoms should improve on their own within a few days. To protect your healing skin, we recommend you avoid direct sun exposure and use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer without exfoliants for a few days. Your brightened and smooth skin will last for about 2-3 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows.
